THE CLASSICAL PERIOD OF ANCIENT GREECE
The Classical Period of Ancient Greece
Idea or Reality
13 July 2002 -13 October 2002

Classicism: There is hardly any other word whose use has been so inflationary, and hardly any other historical period that has exerted such a strong influence on succeeding generations throughout the world as Greek classicism of the 5th century BC. This exhibition, a comprehensive survey of the art and culture of classical Greece and the effects of classicism on later epochs, brings home to the viewer the origin of classicism in all its manifestations. There emerges an exciting panorama that brings to view major works of art as well as everyday life.

On display are Masterworks from approximately 70 museums all over the world. Among these are such spectacular highlights as the tyrannicide group from the National Archaeological Museum in Naples; the statue of Sophocles, author of Greek tragedies, from the Vatican Museums and relief friezes of the Trysa heroon from the Museum of Art History in Vienna.
Next to these are also smaller, lesser known objects that provide an insight into the life, living and working culture of the various levels of ancient Greek society. Architectural elements and sculptures from the Parthenon in Athens are on view - along with replicas of wood furniture from private homes.
